YPSILANTI, MI — Eastern Michigan University is implementing a test-optional admission policy for fall 2020 applicants to ease the stress of the coronavirus pandemic on prospective students.

The new option is available and applies to incoming first-year domestic students entering fall 2020 only, university officials said.

To be considered for test-optional admission, students must:

Once students complete those steps, they will be reviewed by an EMU admissions officer who will take an in-depth look at a student’s official academic record, examine academic coursework, review grades received in core course work and look at academic trends.

“We’ve made this decision in recognition that the COVID-19 pandemic has limited students’ ability to participate in standardized testing,” said Alex Landen, EMU interim associate director of first-year admissions. “We want to focus on creating educational opportunities that are accessible to our students as we continue to fill our role not only in academia but in our community.”

Students with more questions can speak to an adviser here or call 734-487-6453. More information on the test-optional policy can be found here.

EMU has done some different things to help students during the COVID-19 pandemic, including giving $600 to each 2020 graduate and $400 to each incoming freshman, and creating the EMU CARES Grant which provides up to $1,000 for students enrolling in summer courses.

EMU President James Smith announced a number of cost-cutting actions on Wednesday due to “significant losses” from the COVID-19 pandemic, including a pay cut for EMU’s leadership team, freezing all university travel, suspending or delaying capital projects and no salary increases for non-bargained staff in fiscal year 2021.

PREVENTION TIPS

In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus. Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible. Carry hand sanitizer with you, and use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and when you go into places like stores.
